FIFA World Cup 2010
On June 11, 2010 the FIFA World Cup, held once every four years, will begin in South Africa. This is the first time that the World Cup will be held on African soil. While this is an honor for Africa as a whole, this is a special honor for South Africa in particular. It demonstrates that South Africa has the economic, infrastructural, and social resources needed to accommodate the tournament that, during World Cup 2006, attracted 5.9 billion viewers worldwide. Soccer, which is the world’s most popular sport, has a global, devoted following. World Cup 2010 shows that this community, embodied in FIFA, trusts South Africa with its most valuable event.
