Hermanus: 3-day short trip in South Africa
Day One: Cape Town/Gansbaai/Hermanus
Today we make the scenic drive to Gansbaai, the whale capital of South
Africa. Located on the western side of False Bay, Gansbaai is famous
for being the breeding ground for huge numbers of Southern Right
Whales, particularly from July to December. Upon arrival we embark on a
boat tour to see the whales. After spending
time with the whales, the boat heads for Dyer Island and Gyser Rock.
Dyer Island is home to African penguins and Cape Cormorants, while
Gyser Rock is home to 60,000 Cape Fur Seals. As we pass between the two
islands we enter the famous “Shark Alley,” a channel with one of the
densest population of Great White Sharks in the world.
That night we stay at the Birkenhead House, an
opulent beachside accommodation in Hermanus. Perched on the edge of a
cliff overlooking the magnificent vista of the bay, Birkenhead House
offers some of the most luxurious beachside accommodations in
Africa.

Day Two: Hermanus
This morning we set off on a horseback ride through the surrounding Overberg region.
This is a magnificent ride into the Walker Bay Nature Reserve, along
the De Plaat beach to the edge of a nearby lagoon, and then back to our
starting point along the Klein River. We see beautiful scenery,
unspoiled beaches, birdlife, and marine life - sometimes it is even possible to spot whales
from the beach.

Day Three: Hermanus/Cape Town
After one last breakfast prepared by the award-winning Birkenhead chefs, we make the two hour drive back to Cape Town
(breakfast)
