Little Karoo: 4-day Short Trip in South Africa
Day One: Cape Town/Prince Albert
We make the scenic drive from Cape Town to Prince Albert. Our accommodations are at Dennehof Guest House, a quaint,
frontier-style bed & breakfast where we relax as the sun slowly
gives way to the vast African night sky.
Dennehof Guest House (lunch, dinner)
Day Two: Prince Albert
Today we leave for a tour of Die Hel (also known as Gamkaskloof). Die
Hel, a fertile valley hidden deep in the heart of the formidable
Swartberg Mountain Range, stayed mostly isolated from the world until
the 1960’s. Just to get to Die Hel we must navigate the awesome
Swartberg Pass, which zig-zags up and down the mountains and along
hairpin turns, offering magnificent views of the scenery where every
new sight seems better than the last. Peaks tower all around, and the
harsh mountainous landscape provides evidence of the Earth’s geological
power.

Day Three: Prince Albert/Oudtshoorn
First on the itinerary today is a tour of the Cango Caves. Located in
the foothills of the Swartberg Mountains, the Cango Caves are one of
South Africa’s finest and most popular cave systems, attracting
visitors from all over the world. Next we visit a nearby ostrich farm
where we learn about the ostrich industry in South Africa and have the
chance to interact with these massive birds (ostriches are the largest
birds in the world). Finally we visit Meerkat Magic, a meerkat
conservation project in Oudtshoorn. Grant, a.k.a, “The Meerkat Man,” has
been studying meerkats for a very long time (over 12 years) and he is
so knowledgeable that he has even learned all their calls! Once Grant
starts his chirping and chirruping, the meerkats come streaming out of
their homes to see what is going on, providing us with fantastic
close-up interaction with these fuzzy animals.
De Zeeko Guest House (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
Day Four: Oudtshoorn/Cape Town
This morning we leave Oudtshoorn to go back to Cape Town, via South
Africa’s famous Route 62. This scenic drive meanders through mountain
ranges, charming farmlands, old vineyards, and breathtaking passes
before merging back into the hub of activity that is Cape Town.
